JoyceDeWitt started performing on stage at 13 years old. DeWitt was a graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. In her summer production she was persuaded by the director to apply to UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never encountered Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her portrayal of Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 season of sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered following her casting in the second pilot episode of the show. Janet was also featured in an episode of the show The Ropers in 1979. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the finale of Three's Company's 1984 season. She was then featured in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for a number of years. In June 1991, she resumed acting by performing in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. One of her roles was in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired a 1997 episode featuring the character that was based on her. The voice actor was a different actress. She appeared in an episode Cybill and made a brief appearance in Living Single's last episode. [6] She has appeared on television shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
